Imagination and innovation are two of the
many requisites for an informed vibrant city
council. A council that can stimulate within the broader community a sense of expectation and excitement is a winning council, a
thoughtful council: one that Cairns has not experienced for 4 years.
Here’s an idea: build a Labyrinth in one of Cairns’ beautiful parks. Before you scoff, let’s take a look at what
a Labyrinth can provide for the whole community.
For thousands of years the Labyrinth has
played an important role in civilizations
all
around the world, creating a public space for the whole community to experience. The symbolic shape of a
Labyrinth allows walkers to follow a
winding pathway into the centre where
they can enjoy peace and
contemplation. The same pathway that leads you in takes you back to the start: one way in and one way out.
Unlike a maze which is designed to get you lost and anxious, the Labyrinth provides a sense of calm and serenity and
offers the walker a place to slow time down
and clear the head. A Labyrinth is a relatively inexpensive tried and tested landmark that
could be a fantastic interactive community
mental health project.
The idea has been presented to the current council, but the
response has been totally underwhelming.
